January 16, 2024 | 3:00 PM Central

Presented by: Jessica Smith from The University of Texas - Arlington, and Sharon Laver from Charles Sturt University

The growing global nursing workforce shortage has accelerated since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic (International Council of Nurses [ICN], 2021; Lopez, et. Al., 2021). There is a critical need for nursing students entering the health workforce to recognize career opportunities in rural nursing and develop global perspectives about associated issues. This project aimed introduce undergraduate nursing students to rural health issues and pathways to rural nursing as a career option following graduation and registration/licensure and establish international connections with undergraduate students at a similar stage of their development and preparation for the nursing workforce.

In both countries, participants were able to undertake a visit to a rural health service and return to share their observations, learnings and experiences with their international colleagues. This narrative presentation will include participant involvement and outcomes, important learnings for the presenters in relation to project design and implementation and, project outputs.
