Purpose
The 2023 International Rural Nursing Conference is focused on bringing together rural and remote nurses, other healthcare professionals, educators, and researchers to address the unique and varied health aspects of rural and remote communities focusing on culture, global health, policy, and interdisciplinary professional issues.

Objectives

• Culture: Recognize how culture/social determinants of health impact health and healthcare equity, and adopt culturally safe, client-centered approaches to promote positive health outcomes for global rural and remote clients, communities, and populations.
• Health Across the Globe: Examine WHO global health indicators for practice, education, and research strategies to promote the overall health and well-being of rural clients, communities, and populations.
• Policy: Analyze current policies and the leadership skills required to promote positive equitable change for rural/remote nurses, other healthcare professionals, clients, communities, and populations.
• Professional: Evaluate common solutions to address professional issues and challenges involving rural/remote nurses and other health care professionals to promote a healthy workforce for rural/remote clients, communities, and populations.

Keynote Speakers

• Opening Keynote Speaker: Helen Vandenburg

• Filiz Ozmisir is a healthcare professional with over ten years experience in delivering nursing care in acute and chronic care across multiple hospitals in Toronto. She is an active humanitarian and community activist who has led many international programs in the global health setting. She is the founder of Refugee Girls Worldwide (US 501C), a charitable organization that helps displaced girls and women around the world. Under the banner of Refugee Girls Worldwide, Filiz and her team initiated and funded programs, including Preschool Program for Refugee Children in Turkey, Food Security Program on the Syrian border, Maternal Newborn Program and Adolescent Sexual and Reproductive Services in Turkey, Girls Scholarship Program Worldwide, and Educating 1000 Afghan Girls Initiative in Pakistan, Urgent Relief Programs in various countries including Ukraine, Palestine, Turkey and Pakistan. She also formed her personal scholarship program to support vulnerable girls and boys to support their studies. She is presently sponsoring 100 young individuals to continue their education in Turkey. She is also a board member at the William Osler Health Systems Foundation, where she delivered successful fundraising initiatives during the COVID19 PPE shortage. She completed the Nurse Practitioner program specializing in Primary Healthcare and Global Health with Collaborative Specialization in Women’s Health and now studying Medicine to advance her medical skills and knowledge. Currently, she is the CEO of Refugee Girls Worldwide.
• Dr. Lisa Hopp has graciously accepted our invitation to be a keynote speaker. Dr. Hopp is Professor and Dean of the College of Nursing at Purdue University Northwest in Hammond and Westville, Indiana, USA. She is also Director of the Indiana Center for Evidence Based Nursing Practice, a JBI Collaborating Center. She holds two bachelor's degrees-one in French from Grinnell College in Grinnell Iowa and a BSN from Rush University. She earned her MS and PhD from the University of Illinois at Chicago. Since founding the Indiana Center in 2004, she has focused on evidence synthesis, transfer and implementation to improve health outcomes. She is co-author of the book, Introduction to Evidence Based Practice: A Practical Guide for Nursing and has written for various national and international publications. Honors include the American Nurses Association Medical Surgical Nurse of the Year, outstanding teacher at Purdue University Calumet and she was inducted as a fellow in the American Academy of Nursing in 2012.
• Maria C. Clay and Rebecca W. Lewis will be "Identifying the Five Factors and Twenty Elements that comprise the Rural Health Framework."  The Rural Health Theoretical Framework provides a systematic and holistic process for examining the issues rural populations face related to health status and health care access. The framework's premise being, that the health care needs of people living in rural areas are thoroughly examined and the most appropriate interventions implemented when five factors and 25 elements are analyzed specific to the rural area under consideration. Clay and Lewis created this framework which is the basis for a rural health course at East Carolina University. The interdisciplinary course has become essential to the educational preparation for any of the health sciences disciplines including pharmacists, dentists, physicians, nurses, physical therapists, recreational therapists, and social workers. Clay and Lewis co-authored the textbook, Rural Health: A Framework for Understanding the Issues and Their Impact on Rural Populations.

Call for Abstracts – Speakers and Posters - Abstracts Due July 1, 2023

The University of Texas at Arlington’s Center for Rural Health and Nursing is proud to host the 2nd Annual UTA Rural Health Conference Healthcare Challenges and Solutions in Rural Texas Communities held on October 5th in the University Center’s Rio Grande room.

This conference was created to bring awareness to rural health care issues and provide solutions within the state of Texas. We plan to have presenters from rural hospitals, clinics, and organizations in Texas. Please join us to discuss how we, as a group, can increase equity in rural communities around the state.

The Center for Rural Health and Nursing invites you to submit abstracts of original work to showcase at our 2nd Annual UTA Rural Health Conference. Abstracts can be submitted for an oral presentation or a hard copy poster in the following categories.
